If the Netherlands avoid defeat against Ecuador, Qatar will become holders of an unwanted record as the first home nation to be eliminated from a World Cup after a mere two games.
The crowd were buoyant before kick off, with many draped in Qatari colours to show their support.
Their joy slowly disappeared as Senegal took control of the game and as night fell, so did the Qatari dream of a successful home tournament for their side.
