Eric Dier: “Players have to live by FIFA’s decisions”.
England defender Eric Dier commented on the controversies around the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, saying players have no influence over any decisions.
The Tottenham player was 16 years old when the Middle Eastern nation was awarded hosting duties in 2010, and said it’s difficult for players to comment on the situation now.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino gave an extraordinary speech on the eve of the tournament, saying Europeans should apologise for their own historical issues, instead of criticising Qatar.
Dier said he hadn’t seen Infantino’s comments, but admitted there were issues in the build-up to the tournament which were ‘disappointing’.
