O Rei Pelé HAS PASSED AWAY: The ANECDOTE that led him to be the BEST footballer of ALL TIME.
Brazilian football legend Pele passed away at the Albert Einstein Israelite Hospital in Sao Paulo on Thursday, at the age of 82.
Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known internationally as Pele, was admitted to the hospital in November to re-evaluate his treatment for colon cancer. He was later moved to palliative care after being diagnosed with a respiratory infection and was no longer responding to chemotherapy.
Pelé had a tumour removed from his colon in 2021 and had been having regular treatment at the hospital. Born on October 23 1940, the former Brazilian striker was widely considered one of the greatest of all time.
He was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee in 1999. His 1,279 goals in 1,363 games are recognized as Guinness World Record.
Pelé made his first appearance in the Brazilian national team aged 16. He won three World Cups during his international career in 1958, 1962 and 1970, the only player to do so.
The sporting legend is also the joint top goalscorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games.
